Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum Art Heist Lecture

It took just 81 minutes for a pair of thieves targeting Boston’s Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum to abscond with 13 works of art collectively valued at more than $500 million!

Join Ed Mahony, Hartford Courant reporter, on Thursday, April 20, 2023, a 7p.m. and learn all about the Isabella Stewart Gardner heist. Over the years, investigators have established several likely suspects such as George Reissfelder and Leonard DiMuzio, associates of mobster Carmello Merlino, or mafia members and career criminals Jimmy Marks and Robert “Bobby” Gaurente, along with Gaurente’s friend Bobby Donati. Yet despite a Netflix television series, This is a Robbery a hit investigative podcast from the Globe and WBUR and a $10 million reward promised by the FBI, the location of the stolen paintings themselves remains a mystery. One of the main suspects in the heist, Robert “The Cook” Gentile, lived in Manchester, Connecticut and thus fell under the scrutiny of long-time Courant federal crime reporter Mahony, who was one of several reporters featured in the Netflix series. Bring your questions and come hear his thoughts and theories about the single largest property theft in the world.

The fee for this program is $10 for adults and $5 for students and pre-registration is strongly suggested.

Bone up on the facts about the heist with these 2022, 2021, and 2019 Smithsonian Magazine articles and join in the discussion.
