Native Games

Many Native games usually involved the practice of a certain skill that could aid in hunting or other important jobs.  Can you guess what popular sport originated with Native Americans?  Hint:  It involves a stick, a ball and good hand-eye coordination. A new Indigenous game will be starting on the hour, lead by Dan Shears. Dan is an enrolled member of the Nulhegan Abenaki. He has been a cultural and historical educator at Plimoth Patuxet Museums from 2013 – 2016 and held the title of Men’s Technology Supervisor the latter half of those years. He is a bead worker, traditional hide tanner, and birch bark artisan. Dan also holds the title of Material Culture Advisor for his tribe’s Cultural and Historic Preservation Department and some of his reproductions and artwork can be seen at the Mashantucket Pequot Museum and Research Center and the Tomaquag Museum.

Native American Storytelling

Native Peoples relied on Oral Tradition to pass down history, morals and explanations about the world around them and often times Often stories featured animals and other natural elements. .  We are excited to announce that Nowashe Village will host Silvermoon Mars LaRose, a member of the Narragansett Tribe, and Assistant Director of the Tomaquag Museum to lead storytelling. She will also be discussing cultural items that she will be bringing to display.  Interested but can’t make it on July 9?  Purchase and view many Native stories here.
