Celebrate Native American Heritage

Celebrate our second successful season of programming and events at Nowashe Village!

Join us both in Nowashe Village and inside Wood Memorial Library for a variety of educational and eye-opening activities, in celebration of Native American Heritage Month.

Outside

Join Taylor Stasis as she explores the traditional foodways of the Herring Pond Wampanoag Tribal Nation, including hunting, gathering and agricultural practices.  Taylor will discus which wild plants, seeds, nuts and fruits were gathered and the major fish and Fauna hunted.  The smoking and drying of foods for preservation also will be discussed.

Today, Indigenous quillwork is undergoing a revival, after having come close to being a lost art.  Explore the fascinating history and practice of quillwork with Miciah Stasis (Herring Pond Wampanoag) who celebrates and maintains this traditional cultural practice today in her modern art works.  Miciah also will discuss the methodology of creating quillwork pieces and the decorative use of natural dyes.

Inside

Explore Portraits in RED, a Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women Project by artist Nayana LaFond.  November 5 is the last day of this emotional – yet beautiful – exhibit.

Visitors can also learn from professionally filmed oral history videos that the Friends of Wood Memorial Library & Museum created during the pandemic.  Topics include how Native Peoples preserve their cultural heritage and what it’s like living as a Native American in present day.  In their own words, they provide an overview of how they see the earth and all of its living creatures, discuss symbols, the importance of giving thanks, and much more.  Common misconceptions are also explored, most importantly, that Wampum was never considered currency by Native Peoples.
